Overview

The offshore and onshore prospective oil and gas basins of Western Sahara have been divided into 18 licence blocks. The Government of the SADR announced an oil licencing round in Houston in May 2005 and entered into 10 agreements with 6 companies in March 2006.

The country has only been sparsely explored during the 1960’s with less than 1 well per 4,000sqkm onshore and 1 well per 23,000sqkm offshore. Although there is no proven oil systems all the ingredients are known to exist and the region is considered very prospective.
