The Liberated Territories of the SADR lie on the Archean age Reguibat Shield, the northern half of the West African craton. This area is geologically unexplored with modern techniques. Recent work to assess the mineral potential of the SADR has been completed by Hanno Resources under a Technical Cooperation Agreement with the Government of the SADR. The results of this work and analogy to exploration activities in neighbouring Mauritania, suggests the area is highly prospective for iron ore, gold and base metals and uranium.
The Occupied Territories of the SADR consist of two principle geological terrains, the Mauritanides Thrust Belt and the Aauin Coastal Basin. By analogy with exploration activities in Mauritania within the Mauritanides Thrust Belt the area is considered prospective for iron ore, gold and base metals, uranium and rare earth elements. The Aauin Coastal Basin contains the Bou Craa Phosphate Mine, currently operated by the national Morrocan company Office Cherifien des Phosphates, exploiting the natural resources of the SADR against the wishes of the Saharawi people.
