The Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) was proclaimed by the indigenous people of the territory of Western Sahara on 27 February 1976, following the final withdrawal of the Spanish colonial government and military. Since 1976 Morocco has illegally occupied areas of the SADR, in contravention of the UN decolonisation process and has repeatedly frustrated the rights of the Saharawi people to self-determination.

The SADR is a full member of the African Union and is recognised internationally by over 80 countries. The SADR Petroleum and Mining Authority has been established by the Government of the SADR to responsibly manage natural resource development within Western Sahara for the benefit of the Saharawi people.
